Last Week for Carlsbad/Oceanside Teachers to Sign Up for Waste Management/North County Times’ Newspaper in Education
Classrooms Receive Free Newspapers, Environmental Curriculum for One Month

CARLSBAD/OCEANSIDE, Oct. 10, 2006 - This is the last week for 4th-9th grade teachers in Carlsbad and Oceanside to sign up for Waste Management of North County and Coast Waste Management’s Newspaper in Education Program. The company, which provides waste and recycling collection services in both cities, is sponsoring an environmental education-themed program in partnership with the North County Times.

The program begins next week and will run through America Recycles Day on Nov. 15. Teachers that participate receive free weekly deliveries of the North County Times as well as the "Earth Savers" environmental education curriculum developed by Waste Management. The curriculum is written to state standards and has activities that go along with information in the newspapers to teach students about the environment. So, for example, students will read about recycling and then complete a chart about the things they can recycle at home; or they will look to find information about businesses in the newspaper and list out what types of wastes and recyclable materials these businesses might generate and how they can be responsible about their disposal. There is also information about energy conservation, material reuse and composting.

At the completion of the program, teachers whose classrooms have participated will be eligible to win a gift certificate for the purchase of classroom supplies.

Carlsbad or Oceanside teachers interested in participating should contact Darlene Kingman, Newspaper in Education Coordinator, at 760-901-4106. The deadline for sign-ups is Friday, Oct. 13.
