Recycle and Buy Recycled
For America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, Waste Management
Encourages Customers to Make a Commitment to the Environment
Carlsbad/Oceanside, Nov. 6, 2006 - Americans recycle about 31 percent of their trash, up from just 6 percent in 1960 and 16 percent in 1990, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Making the leap to the next recycling milestone means Americans need to make a commitment not only to recycle, but also to buy items with recycled content – and the perfect time to do this is for America Recycles Day (ARD) on Nov. 15.
ARD is a national, all-volunteer, non-profit organization that began in 1997 with the goal of encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products. Last year, residents in every state of the nation participated in ARD and pledged to recycle. Waste Management Recycle America serves as a Champion Sponsor for ARD.
Waste Management, combined with its wholly owned subsidiary WM Recycle America, is North America’s largest recycler, which means we help our nearly 21 million residential, industrial, municipal and commercial customers reduce their waste and increase the materials that can be used again to make new products. We handle 5.8 million tons of commodities, such as aluminum, glass and cardboard, each year, and our total recycling efforts save enough energy to power 1.6 million households.
“We’ve made a commitment to our customers to be responsible recyclers every day through the work we do in their communities, and we hope our customers will use America Recycles Day as an opportunity to resolve to recycle now and in the future,” said Ken Ryan, District Manager for Coast Waste Management in Carlsbad and Waste Management of North County in Oceanside. “It’s one thing to say that we support recycling. It’s quite another to step up to the challenge. We at Waste Management recycle every day, and we encourage all Americans to learn more about the importance of recycling. America Recycles Day is a great learning opportunity.”
While many items are recycled back into the same item, a number of materials can be recycled and used in making new products:
|
What goes in your recycling bin…
...What comes out
Plastic beverage containers
Fiber fill for ski jackets, rugs, park benches, fences, goggles, tote bags
Steel and aluminum cans
New cars, bikes, appliances, cookware
Glass bottles and containers
Marbles, tiles, surfboards
Newspaper
New newsprint, egg cartons, paperboard
Printer/copier paper
Stationery, newsprint, paper for magazines/books
“We encourage everyone to take the opportunity on Nov. 15 to do something for the environment for America Recycles Day,” said Ryan. “Whether it’s helping with a recycling project in your community, purchasing products made from recycled materials or simply making sure you place your aluminum, plastic and glass in your recycling bin, it’s important that we all make a commitment to be responsible recyclers.”
